Riders have become the first Spanish team to reach ESL Pro League.
Movistar Riders have become the second team in EPL Conference to secure an ESL Pro League Season 15 spot following Extra Salt’s victory over MAD Lions on Friday.
Alejandro "alex" Masanet and company, who recently became the first Spanish team to qualify for a Major, have now become the first to reach ESL Pro League, and they did so by overcoming GODSENT confidently in two maps, Overpass (16-13) and Nuke (16-9), despite losing all four pistol rounds.
Epitacio "TACO" de Melo and company are not out yet, though, and they will have a chance to qualify for ESL Pro League through the lower bracket. They will go up against LDLC at 20:00 , following Sprout and MAD Lions’ bout at 16:45 , with the final Conference match set to take place on Sunday.
Movistar Riders keep making history for Spain
The ESL Pro League qualifying series started off on Overpass, the Brazilian team’s pick and a map that Movistar Riders have recently struggled on, losing it three times in a row to HEROIC, Enterprise and worryingly to RBG with a 7-16 scoreline. Despite the poor track record and a slow start, going down 0-4, the Spaniards found their groove late in the first half with a long winning streak on the CT side and a strong performance by Álvaro "SunPayus" García to hit double digits before the switch.
GODSENT won a crucial pistol round to kick off their defense, even taking a brief 12-11 lead going into the late rounds of the map, but just as it seemed that Movistar Riders were struggling to find answers on the T side they won a forcebuy with an AWP an AK-47 and upgraded pistols that turned the tides of the map as they went on to win it out 16-13 to set the series in their favor early on.
The Brazilians once again took an early lead, this time on the CT side of Nuke, with Bruno "latto" Rebelatto shutting down Movistar Riders with a quad-kill in the second round, a forcebuy by the terrorists. Alejandro "mopoz" Fernández-Quejo Cano and company were then able to bounce back and keep things close all the way to the half, however, and only trailed by one before switching to the defense.
Eduardo "dumau" Wolkmer and company made it four out of four in pistol rounds, but lost against a forcebuy in the second round which boosted Movistar Riders’ economy as the team led by alex then went on a tear without giving up a single round to end it 16-9 with mopoz leading the way.
